The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a mandatory digital travel permit required for citizens of eligible countries visiting the United Kingdom for short stays. Functioning as a pre-departure entry clearance, the ETA allows UK authorities to securely review traveler information before your flight, which helps facilitate a much faster and smoother experience at the border. Initially introduced in late 2023 and rolled out in phases, this digital requirement has expanded significantly and, as of April 2025, applies to almost all visa-exempt travelers.
UK ETA — Electronic Travel Authorisation
The UK ETA is a digital pre-clearance required for nationals of visa-exempt countries who previously could travel to the UK without any prior authorisation. It is linked electronically to your passport, no sticker or stamp required.
The ETA is not a visa. It allows multiple short stays of up to 6 months each, for tourism, business meetings, or transiting through the UK.
Who Needs a UK ETA?
The ETA is required for nationals of the following country groups when travelling to the UK for short stays.
Visa-Exempt Nationals
Citizens of 82 countries that previously needed no visa or pre-travel permission now require an ETA. This includes nationals of the US, Canada, Australia, EU member states, and Gulf countries.
Who Does NOT Need an ETA?
British and Irish citizens, UK residents with a valid visa or BRP, and nationals of countries that require a full UK visa are exempt from ETA. Check the full list before applying.
Transit Passengers
Most transit passengers from ETA-eligible countries passing through a UK airport also require an ETA, unless they hold a valid UK visa or qualify for transit without visa.
